Train World is proud to host two low-stimulus days in 2024. One on Wednesday April 17 and the other on October 2. On these days we organize adapted activities in an adapted museum. What is a 'low-stimulus day'? It is a day that allows for a museum visit in a quiet and adapted environment. The low-stimulus day is for those who like it a bit quieter. In order to ensure a comfortable visit for everyone, the museum is adjusting its scenography. The lighting is adjusted and sounds are turned off. We arrange for some quiet spaces in the museum. A tailored plan shows you the specifics of each room in the museum using a colour code. The quietest spots are in light yellow; the most stimulating in dark red.

The 1930s saw the emergence of the first modest forms of mass tourism in Belgium and ordinary citizens were also able to take trips away for the first time. Most people limited themselves to a short stay on the Belgian coast or in the Ardennes, or contented themselves with a few day trips. The new market of day tourism was soon noticed by SNCB and by some large private travel agencies and organisations. Every year during the summer season, dozens of excursion train services were put on from large and medium-sized cities to all kinds of tourist resorts in Belgium and neighbouring foreign countries. Sometimes they even involved 'mystery tours' to unknown destinations! A great deal of attention was paid to providing support to passengers, by employing additional train staff and installing sound systems in the carriages. This made it possible to communicate tourist information and all kinds of practical details to passengers, as well as to regale them with music during the journey... Thus the 'radio train' was born. The public signed up en masse for excursions by radio train, but their popularity waned after WWII. The last radio train ran in 1964. The speaker will discuss the great success of excursion and radio train services in the years of emerging (mass) tourism and illustrate his story with some tourist train trips that were organised at that time. The lecture will also focus on the rolling stock (coaches and radio-fitted carriages) that made up the trains.

Climb aboard a mysterious train and set off for imaginary lands, plunge into traditional tales and modern-day stories, as you quake, marvel and discover... during a surprising storytelling journey hosted by storyteller Pascal Mitsuru Guéran. Embark on an exciting and original family trip! “Contes au Musée” (stories at the museum) is a project initiated by the Fédération de Conteurs Professionnels (federation of professional storytellers) in partnership with Brussels Museums and MSW. For the whole 23/24 season, professional storytellers will bring their stories into the museums of Brussels and Wallonia. A meeting between two separate cultural worlds: the art of storytelling, and the heritage exhibited in the rich diversity of artistic expressions displayed in the museums. This project introduces 50 storytelling artists in over 130 partner museums. Enough to showcase our heritage and feed our imagination!
