Franchimont Castle

Franchimont, an ancient stronghold of the Province of Liège, stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking three magnificent valleys in the northern Ardennes, 8 km from the town of Spa.

The current remains are a spectacular example of a medieval castle, reworked in the early Modern Age.
Interactive tours with individual audio guide.

The 11th-12 century castle forms the hub of the fortress and is surrounded by ramparts dating back to the early 16th century.

This construction is a rare example of the evolution of defence systems during the Renaissance: the bunkers and their underground access galleries are one of the highlights of the tour.

You can round off your visit to this romantic site at the pleasant "Brasserie de Franchimont" – a tavern with a shaded terrace facing the castle, serving meals and drinks for your picnic.

Franchimont Medieval Fair will take place over the third weekend in August 2015.
The ancient walls of Franchimont castle, proudly overhanging the town of Theux, will ring with the cries, murmurs and rustling of the medieval fair. This event always takes places over the third weekend in August in odd years.
Everything has been recreated so you can enjoy the atmosphere of a fair from 1514-1520, ruled by the benefactor Erard de la Marck, the Prince Bishop.
Costumes, texts, dances, music and décor are all as close to the period as possible. To add to the participatory nature for the visitors, all exchanges will be made with period money inside the boundaries of the event.
