An ideal visit for those who love understanding what goes on behind the scenes, discovering the origins of an artistic calling and feeling the emotion of beginnings, during a sensitive and authentic cultural getaway in the Borinage.
Before the sunflowers, before Arles, before recognition, there was the Borinage. The Van Gogh House invites visitors to step into a formative and often little-known period of the life of Vincent Van Gogh. Here, between 1878 and 1880, the future painter lives, observes, doubts and takes the first decisive steps on the path toward art. An intimate and deeply human visit that sheds new light on the work of one of the greatest artists of the nineteenth century.
The Van Gogh House immerses visitors in the modest yet intense daily life of Vincent during his time in the Borinage. At that time, he was not yet a recognised painter but a man searching for meaning, close to the miners, deeply affected by the harshness of their living conditions and moved by a profound empathy for the most vulnerable.
The visit helps visitors understand this decisive context through a clear and accessible timeline retracing the major stages of his life. Visitors discover a self-taught Van Gogh, still in the process of shaping his path, learning, observing and beginning to translate the world around him through drawing.
The visit highlights the drawing tools used in Van Gogh’s early learning, his attempts, his research and his influences. Reproductions of works created during his time in the region illustrate this period of experimentation, when art gradually became a personal language.
Van Gogh’s literary preferences and his epistolary exchanges also play an important role in the exhibition. His letters, rich and sincere, reveal his reflections, his inner struggles and his vision of the world. They offer a glimpse into the intimacy of a sensitive, passionate and deeply committed man.
The Van Gogh House offers a visiting experience designed for all audiences. A visitor’s guide, a documentary, and visual and narrative materials accompany the journey, offering different levels of interpretation. Whether one is an art enthusiast, a history lover or simply curious about the human story, everyone finds their own entry point.
The atmosphere of the place is sober and respectful, inviting reflection. Visitors sense both the weight of reality and the beginnings of a creative impulse. It is a visit that does not seek spectacle, but rather authentic emotion.
Located in Wallonia, in the Borinage, the Van Gogh House offers essential insight into the artist’s journey. It reminds visitors that genius does not emerge from nowhere, but is shaped by life experiences, encounters and challenges.
Visitors leave with a more nuanced and personal image of Van Gogh: that of a man in the making, profoundly human, whose way of seeing the world began here to transform into art.
