Centre Marcel Marlier – Draw Me Martine, a gentle and creative immersion in the world of childhood

From the moment you enter the Centre Marcel Marlier – Draw Me Martine, a familiar emotion emerges. It is the feeling of a return to childhood, soft and luminous, carried by images that have accompanied entire generations. This exhibition journey pays tribute to Marcel Marlier, an emblematic figure of the region and a world-renowned illustrator for the Martine series. Yet here, visitors discover far more than a character: they step into the sensitive universe of an artist whose attentive gaze is warm and deeply human.

An interactive experience to share with all ages

Designed as a participatory and intergenerational space, the centre combines animated videos, games, archives, sketches and original illustrations. Children play, handle objects and explore. Adults, meanwhile, are carried away by nostalgia, often surprised by the emotion felt when facing images that shaped their childhood.

Several levels of discovery naturally coexist. Visitors can simply wander and marvel, or go further and understand the meticulous work of the illustrator, the precision of the line and the softness of the colours. The multimedia installations, including Martine games created especially for the Centre, bring a playful and contemporary touch while remaining faithful to the original charm of the work.

Marcel Marlier, far beyond Martine

Many visitors come for Martine and leave pleasantly surprised. The exhibition reveals the richness of Marcel Marlier’s work, far beyond the famous heroine. Visitors discover a complete artist—curious, demanding and guided by values of kindness, curiosity and sharing.

A sense of local pride also emerges: learning that Marcel Marlier was born in Mouscron, and not in France as many had imagined, creates a special connection with the region. This human and regional dimension strengthens the bond between visitors, the place and the artist.

A gentle atmosphere that encourages transmission

The atmosphere of the Centre is marked by a soothing softness. Everything encourages sharing between generations: parents recount memories, grandparents introduce their Martine to grandchildren, and children identify with the illustrated adventures—swimming, horse riding, travel, visits to the zoo and forest explorations. Simple scenes that nourish imagination and the desire for adventure.

Some anecdotes bring smiles: visitors from Canada, China or New Zealand, all guided by childhood memories; or women named Martine who explain that their name was inspired by the albums. Moments that reveal the universal reach of this work.

A place of wonder in the heart of Mouscron

Located in Mouscron, the Centre Marcel Marlier naturally fits into a cultural escape in Wallonia, ideal for families but just as touching for a solo visit. Visitors leave with a smile, a softened outlook and the feeling of having shared something truly precious.
