Citadel of Dinant, a spectacular fortress suspended above the Meuse

Clinging to its rocky spur, the Citadel of Dinant towers over the city and the Meuse valley at more than 100 metres high. It is impossible to remain indifferent before this giant of stone overlooking the river. From the moment you arrive, the view opens onto a breathtaking panorama, while the dense and eventful history of the site gradually reveals itself in a setting that is both majestic and meaningful.

A journey through centuries, guided by technology

The visit to the Citadel of Dinant becomes a truly immersive experience thanks to an augmented-reality visitor companion. Along the route, 13 time gates guide the exploration, allowing visitors to travel through the major periods that shaped both the fortress and the city. You discover the citadel during the Dutch period, its transformation into a military prison, and the darker chapters connected to the battles of 1914.

This approach makes history surprisingly vivid. Adults delve into the military, political and architectural issues, while younger visitors explore the site in their own curious and attentive way.

A powerful experience between immersion and emotion

One of the most striking moments of the visit is the collapsed shelter, which places visitors in the footsteps of a World War I soldier whose trench has just been struck by a shell. The experience is striking, almost unsettling, and leaves a lasting impression. Here, history is not only explained—it is felt, with both respect and intensity.

For families, an interactive treasure hunt invites children to search for hidden objects throughout the route. It is a playful and clever way to bring history to life while preserving its depth.

A lively site designed to extend the visit

After the exploration, everyone finds their own rhythm. Children can enjoy the playground, while adults relax on the terrace, surrounded by cannons and casemates. The contrast between the lively energy of families and the strength of the historic site creates a surprisingly convivial atmosphere.

For refreshments, several options are available: a cafeteria-friterie next to the playground, a snack break inside the Citadel, or a pleasant and affordable restaurant on Dinant’s Grand Place.

A discovery to combine with the Meuse

To extend the experience, the Citadel of Dinant fits perfectly into a full day of exploration in the region. A combined package allows visitors to continue discovering the area from the water, with a cruise on the Meuse to Anseremme, offering a completely different perspective on the valley and its landscapes. Special packages are also available for groups, making it easy to enjoy this immersive experience together.
