A perfect place for those who love elegant residences, contemplative gardens and sites steeped in family history, to discover during a peaceful stroll, as a couple, with family or during a stay along the Meuse, in Wallonia.
In a peaceful bend of the Meuse, the Freÿr Castle and Gardens unfold as a haven of harmony and refinement. Listed as an Exceptional Heritage Site of Wallonia, this family estate, owned by the Counts of Spontin since 1378, offers a rare experience: that of a place still inhabited and carefully passed down from generation to generation, where history is told with gentleness and light.
Originally a fortified castle from the late 16th century, Freÿr was transformed in the 18th century into an elegant and comfortable summer residence. As visitors walk through the rooms of the castle, furnished between the 17th and 19th centuries, they discover a living interior shaped by the descendants of Gilda, Countess of Laubespin – de Beaufort-Spontin. Period furniture, paintings, ceramics and everyday objects all contribute to a genuine immersion in castle life in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The building itself is captivating for its balance: an architecture both imposing and welcoming, combining red brick and limestone, perfectly integrated into the surrounding green landscape. Here, nothing feels frozen in time. The castle is still inhabited by the family, giving the visit a deeply human and authentic atmosphere.
Outside, the French-style gardens invite visitors to slow down. Structured paths, groves, and pools animated by water jets operating through the ingenious principle of communicating vessels, without pumps or machinery, create a peaceful setting. The gentle murmur of water accompanies the walk, while the view opens onto the picturesque Meuse valley, with the Freÿr rocks rising majestically in the background.
The small hornbeam mazes, carefully trimmed, add a playful and poetic touch to the experience. Visitors gladly lose themselves for a moment, sharing a smile or a quiet family moment.
Freÿr is also renowned for its exceptional collection of orange trees, cultivated and cherished since 1710. Their presence gives the estate a distinctive identity. The orangeries, open to visitors, shelter these precious trees during the winter months. Today, the collection has been enriched with other citrus trees, and when the blossoms appear, their delicate fragrance fills the gardens with an almost Mediterranean atmosphere.
This patient and continuous cultivation reflects a respectful relationship with time, nature and transmission, true to the spirit of the site.
Overlooking the gardens, the neoclassical garden pavilion, built in 1775, offers a remarkable viewpoint over the entire estate and the Meuse. Accessible to visitors, it is often one of the highlights of the visit. People linger here, carried by the beauty of the setting and the rare feeling of being outside of time, in a place that has remained remarkably intact.
The Freÿr Castle and Gardens are among the rare sites in the region where visitors can explore both the castle and its gardens, in a natural and harmonious continuity.
