Keramis – Centre of Ceramics, a place of wonder between industrial heritage and contemporary creation

At Keramis, ceramics tell stories. Stories of gestures, fire, material and collective memory. Located on the emblematic site of the former Boch earthenware factory, this unique centre in Wallonia brings together industrial heritage, historic collections, contemporary art and living creation. A place where visitors are surprised, where they learn, and where everyone can find a personal resonance, often tinged with memories.

An exceptional industrial heritage, rich with emotion

From the moment you arrive, your attention is drawn to the impressive 19th-century Bottle Kilns, listed and remarkably preserved. These giants of brick, once the beating heart of ceramic production, naturally command respect. They testify to the industrial scale of the site and to the importance of the Boch earthenware factory in the history of the industrial and decorative arts.

Inside, the Boch earthenware collections awaken a collective memory that is surprisingly alive. The famous Delft Blues, the creations of Charles Catteau, Ernest D’Hoosche and Raymond-Henri Chevallier often spark spontaneous reactions:
I received this set for my wedding , My grandmother used these plates on Sundays
These objects, both aesthetic and familiar, create an immediate link between industrial history and the everyday life of the past.

Contemporary ceramic art, between surprise and boldness

Keramis is not limited to the past. The centre is also a reference place for contemporary ceramics, with temporary exhibitions dedicated to artists of today. Forms, textures and approaches constantly renew themselves, playing with material, fire and the limits of the medium.

The architectural quality of the site, often highlighted by visitors, enhances the experience. The spaces are bright and elegant, creating a striking contrast between the rawness of the industrial heritage and the finesse of the artworks displayed. Here, surprise and wonder accompany every visit, inviting visitors to take a fresh look at ceramics as a true art form.

Getting your hands in the clay: learning and creating together

At Keramis, creation is not only observed, it is experienced. The ceramics workshops invite both children and adults to get their hands in the clay, to experiment and to understand the material through gesture. These moments are often experienced as family sharing, where learning happens through doing in a convivial and stimulating atmosphere.

Artists also create on site, in the museum’s studios, making the creative process visible and accessible. This proximity to artistic creation strengthens the feeling of being in a living place, constantly evolving, where research and transmission play a central role.

A place where curiosity and wonder meet

Located in La Louvière, Keramis is far more than a museum. It is a space for discovery, learning and emotion, where industrial heritage engages in dialogue with contemporary creation. Visitors come for the collections, stay for the atmosphere, and often leave with the desire to look differently at everyday objects.
