An ideal visit for families, nature lovers and all those who enjoy learning through wonder, in a place where curiosity is always welcome.
The University Aquarium-Museum of Liège is one of those places often discovered with enthusiasm and left with stars in the eyes. Located in the very heart of the city of Liège, it invites visitors of all ages to dive into the abundant world of aquatic biodiversity, while awakening scientific curiosity. Here, wonder blends naturally with learning, in a welcoming and accessible atmosphere, ideal for a family outing or for anyone curious about nature.
For several generations, this emblematic site has created lasting memories and inspired vocations. Visitors come to observe, understand, ask questions and above all, to be amazed.
The visit begins with the Aquarium, the true beating heart of the site. Through around fifty aquariums, nearly 300 species evolve in carefully recreated natural environments. Eyes move from one tank to another, captivated by the colours, shapes and sometimes unexpected behaviours of inhabitants from both freshwater and marine worlds.
The route crosses several environments: temperate or tropical waters, distant seas, luminous lagoons, coral reefs and even an Amazonian space. Sharks, living corals and exotic fish fascinate as much as they raise questions. Throughout the visit, educational information panels and the Fishipedia virtual encyclopedia accompany the discovery, making the experience both playful and enriching.
The TréZOOr gallery offers another perspective, more heritage-focused yet just as captivating. This permanent space retraces the history of the Institution and the natural science collections of the University of Liège since 1817. Visitors discover the evolution of scientific methods, particularly the art of taxidermy, illustrated through comparisons between historical and modern techniques.
The route also evokes extinct animals, didactic models made of wax or glass, and above all an exceptional collection: the Blaschka models. Created in the 19th century by Leopold Blaschka and his son Rudolf, these glass artworks of remarkable finesse astonish with their realism and delicacy. A suspended moment, often unexpected, that leaves a lasting impression on visitors.
The Aquarium-Museum is a dynamic and lively place. Every weekend, passionate science mediators are present to share their knowledge around a mobile observation table. The exchanges are spontaneous, suitable for all ages, and allow visitors to observe certain specimens up close. At various times throughout the year, special events and activities enrich the experience: treasure hunts, storytelling sessions, creative workshops and interactive discoveries.
A single ticket also provides access to the Maison de la Science and the Planetarium, extending the scientific adventure even further in the heart of Liège.
