A perfect place for those who like being surprised, who are looking for living, soothing heritage, and who enjoy gentle discoveries to experience at your own pace, with family, as a couple or simply for yourself.
The Abbey of Stavelot has the rare ability to surprise without ever overwhelming. Founded in the 7th century, it is the oldest monastic foundation in Belgium, yet nothing here feels frozen in the past. From the moment you enter, a different feeling emerges: a peaceful atmosphere, almost enveloping, inviting visitors to slow down and look around with fresh eyes. In the heart of Stavelot, in the province of Liège, this vast heritage complex combines history, culture and unexpected discoveries in a setting that naturally encourages relaxation.
Visitors often say it, sometimes with genuine surprise: We didn’t know there was so much here. And that is precisely where the charm of the place lies.
The abbey houses three museums, connected through a smooth and natural visitor route. The historical museum helps visitors understand the importance of the abbey through the centuries, its spiritual role and its place in local life. The stones seem to tell stories, the objects quietly speak, and history unfolds without heaviness in a muted atmosphere where sounds feel softened.
Then comes a contrast that is as surprising as it is delightful: the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit Museum. Within this serene monastic setting, the legend of speed and motor racing finds its place. Photographs, stories and objects linked to the famous nearby circuit awaken curiosity and create an unexpected dialogue between ancient heritage and mechanical passion.
The third museum space completes this richness with a cultural and artistic perspective, regularly renewed through temporary exhibitions. Each visit can therefore offer a different view, a new way to approach the site.
What leaves a lasting impression at the Abbey of Stavelot is the feeling of serenity. Light plays across the old walls, footsteps echo softly, and visitors instinctively lower their voices. The calm is such that everyone feels free to experience the visit at their own pace, without pressure.
An anecdote perfectly illustrates this spirit: one day, a piano still standing in one of the rooms caught the attention of a visitor. He sat down and began to play. Gradually, others approached, smiling and moved by the simple and unexpected moment. A spontaneous scene, full of humanity, that beautifully reflects the soul of the place: relaxation, curiosity and shared moments.
After exploring the museums, the visit continues naturally. A shop, a brasserie and welcoming spaces invite visitors to pause, share impressions or simply enjoy the moment. Just minutes from the surrounding countryside and close to other emblematic sites in the region, the abbey fits perfectly into a broader Wallonia escape, combining culture and fresh air.
The Abbey of Stavelot is not a place to rush through. It is discovered slowly, felt deeply, and often leaves visitors with the desire to return, as it reveals many different facets within the same peaceful setting.
