MACS – Museum of Contemporary Arts of Grand-Hornu, contemporary art in an exceptional heritage setting

At the MACS, contemporary art takes on a distinctive dimension. Located on the emblematic site of Grand-Hornu, this museum offers a rare experience: discovering international-scale exhibitions within a dual architectural setting, where the strength of industrial history dialogues with the creativity of today. A unique, inspiring and accessible place that leaves a lasting impression on visitors.

A museum born from an exemplary transformation

Recognised as one of the most successful examples in Northern Europe of converting an industrial site into a cultural venue, the MACS opened its doors in 2002. Away from major urban centres, it benefits from the spirit of the place that characterises Grand-Hornu: a powerful, peaceful atmosphere filled with meaning, which has inspired many leading artists from the international scene for more than twenty years.

The exhibitions presented are often designed in direct dialogue with the site. The works interact with the architecture, the volumes and the history of the place, giving rise to site-specific, sensitive and powerful projects that could hardly be imagined elsewhere.

International exhibitions open to everyone

The MACS stands out for the quality and ambition of its programme, while maintaining a clear objective: making contemporary art accessible to the widest possible audience. Here, there is no need to be a specialist to feel at ease. The exhibitions are designed to encourage discovery, reflection and sometimes surprise, always with respect for the visitor.

This commitment is reflected in a broad programme of mediation including free daily guided tourscreative workshopscoursesfamily daysmeetings, debates and conferences. Each offers an opportunity to engage in dialogue with the artworks, the artists and the ideas they convey.

A vibrant and welcoming cultural hub

The MACS forms, together with the CID – centre for innovation and design, a true cultural hub that has become a popular destination for lovers of art and cultural tourism. The visit naturally continues with a walk in the park, a stop at the shop specialising in design and contemporary art, or a gourmet break at the site’s gastronomic restaurant.

The warm welcome is frequently highlighted by visitors. From the moment of arrival, people feel comfortable and welcome, free to take their time, ask questions or retrace their steps. A human touch that further enhances the pleasure of discovery.

A unique cultural experience in Wallonia

The MACS captivates through its rare balance between artistic excellence, accessibility and an exceptional heritage setting. Visitors may come for an exhibition, but they leave with the feeling of having experienced something complete, where art, place and time intertwine.
