An ideal visit for those who love museums open to nature, inspiring walks and places where you travel through time and cultures, with family, as a couple or solo.
Listed as an exceptional heritage site of Wallonia, the Domaine & Royal Museum of Mariemont is a place often discovered with surprise and rarely forgotten. Here, art, history and nature interact with remarkable elegance within a vast 43-hectare English landscape park, considered by many to be a true work of natural art. It is a place apart, far from the noise of the city, where visitors come as much to learn as to breathe.
From the moment you arrive, the feeling of escape is immediate. The Mariemont Park, entirely free to access, spreads out like a green lung in the heart of the region. Winding paths, centuries-old and remarkable trees, flower beds, water features and fountains create a landscape in constant transformation. With each season, the scenery changes, offering a new perspective on the site.
Visitors stroll freely between contemplation and curiosity, accompanied by birdsong—the estate also includes a bird reserve. Many visitors speak of the simple pleasure of walking, that feeling of space and calm that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the moment.
At the heart of the estate, the museum presents one of the largest public collections in Belgium. The permanent collections are free, as is access to the park, and exhibitions are free for visitors under 18, with a deliberately affordable price for adults. On the first Sunday of every month, entry is free for everyone, reinforcing the idea of a place truly open to all.
The collections offer a journey through great civilizations and historical periods, from distant cultures to our own European heritage. The diversity of the objects—often highlighted by visitors—creates a rich and engaging route where one travels from continent to continent and from century to century without leaving the same space.
The museum building, designed by Roger Bastin, is a striking example of Belgian Brutalist architecture. Bright and open to the surrounding park, it creates a constant link between inside and outside. The spaces invite contemplation, offering soothing views of the greenery and reinforcing the ongoing dialogue between culture and nature.
Mariemont is not only a place to visit—it is also a major cultural and scientific centre of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. Research, archaeological excavations, projects related to new technologies, conferences, symposia and publications all take place here, alongside the Book Workshop, dedicated to research and training. The site is in constant evolution, regularly enriched by new acquisitions.
High-quality temporary exhibitions, guided tours often praised for the enthusiasm of the guides, and activities for children, families and adults: Mariemont offers a diverse programme designed for all ages. Many describe it as a hidden gem, a place still relatively unknown that deserves to be discovered—and revisited.
The distinctions confirm this recognition: favourite estate of the people of Wallonia, and two stars in the Michelin Guide in the Travel and Culture category. Yet beyond the labels, what visitors remember most are the family memories, shared emotions and the deep sense of well-being the place provides.
The Domaine & Royal Museum of Mariemont offers a complete experience, where visitors can spend a few hours or an entire day between relaxation, discovery and wonder. A place that connects cultures, eras and generations in an exceptional natural setting.
