An ideal experience for those who enjoy combining history, the art of living and nature, and who want to discover a château inhabited by centuries, in one of Wallonia’s most beautiful natural settings.
The Château de Modave offers a rare experience, where the elegance of history constantly interacts with the power of nature. Listed as an Exceptional Heritage Site of Wallonia, it stands on top of a rocky spur, overlooking a 450-hectare nature reserve. From the moment you arrive, the setting impresses: the eye wanders across the landscapes, and the atmosphere becomes calmer, almost solemn. Here, the visit is more than discovering a castle: it is a complete immersion in castle life, at the heart of a preserved natural site.
This blend of architecture, art and environment immediately sets the tone: Modave is best discovered slowly, with the pleasure of taking your time.
The castle presents a classical architecture from the mid-17th century, built on the foundations of a former medieval keep. This layering of periods strengthens the character of the site and gives it a timeless elegance. The remarkable state of preservation and the care devoted to its maintenance are striking from the first steps, giving the impression of entering a residence still inhabited by its history.
Each façade and each architectural detail tells the story of the ambition and refinement of successive owners, in a subtle balance between defensive strength and the art of living.
The interior visit unfolds through 25 fully decorated and furnished rooms, accessible via an audioguided route available in eight languages. Here, nothing feels static: the set tables, the floral decorations, the tapestries and the authentic furniture give the impression that the occupants have only just stepped out.
The 17th-century stucco ceilings are among the highlights of the visit. One of them, depicting a family tree unique in Europe, impresses both through its delicacy and its symbolism. The decorations, materials and colours immerse visitors in the daily life of past nobility, making history tangible and alive.
Outside, the listed gardens naturally extend the discovery. Carefully maintained and structured, they offer elegant perspectives over the surrounding landscape. From the castle, marked walking trails lead visitors into the heart of the nature reserve, between forests, cliffs and open panoramas.
This unique location reinforces the feeling of escape. Visitors move seamlessly from the intimacy of the salons to the vastness of nature, in a rare balance between culture and the outdoors.
The site also evokes a fascinating chapter in technical history: that of the 17th-century hydraulic machine, designed by Liège engineer Rennequin Sualem, which served as the model for the famous Machine de Marly that supplied water to the gardens of Versailles. Further evidence of the human ingenuity at work in Modave.
Throughout the year, the castle remains vibrant thanks to numerous cultural activities: concerts, theatre, exhibitions, themed visits and various events enrich the experience and continually renew visitors’ perspectives on the site.
