Comic Strip Museum – Dive into the vibrant world of the Ninth Art inside an Art Nouveau masterpiece

The Comic Strip Museum invites visitors into a world where images tell stories, speech bubbles come to life and Belgian imagination flourishes with boundless creativity. Housed in a magnificent Art Nouveau building designed by Victor Horta, this emblematic museum in Brussels elegantly combines architecture, heritage and the ninth art. From the moment you step inside, the setting feels bright, fluid and inspiring—almost magical.

Within this historic building, a former department store and the last surviving example of this type of structure built by Horta, comic art finds the perfect showcase. Just minutes from the city centre, the visit unfolds as a joyful and insightful exploration, accessible to enthusiasts and curious visitors alike—nostalgic adults as well as fascinated children.

A century of Belgian comic art to discover

The heart of the museum beats through its permanent exhibition, A Century of Belgian Comics , which serves as the guiding thread of the visit. Visitors journey through the major stages of comic strip history, from its origins to the present day, discovering how this medium became a cornerstone of Belgian culture.

Original comic pages immediately draw attention. Visitors pause, lean closer and study the lines, the ink and sometimes even visible corrections. Each drawing reveals not only the story it illustrates but also the gesture of the artist. Comic art emerges as a demanding and expressive artistic discipline in its own right.

The museum highlights the richness of Belgium’s comic heritage, celebrated far beyond its borders, while offering insights into the evolution of styles, themes and techniques.

A living museum with ever-changing exhibitions

Beyond its permanent display, the Comic Strip Museum stands out for its extensive programme of temporary exhibitions, regularly renewed throughout the year. These exhibitions present fresh perspectives on the Ninth Art, focusing on a particular artist, movement, graphic universe or thematic approach.

This constant renewal encourages visitors to return and rediscover the museum from new angles. Rather than freezing comic art in the past, the museum presents it as a living, contemporary and ever-evolving art form.

A place of discovery and aesthetic admiration

The visit is also a visual and architectural experience in itself. The Art Nouveau building, with its curved lines, glass ceilings and elegant volumes, subtly interacts with the works on display. Visitors often look up as much to admire the architecture as to follow the narrative flow of the exhibitions.

The museum’s comic library, one of the most comprehensive in the world, extends the experience further. It offers a space to browse, compare and explore countless titles at leisure—a treasure for enthusiasts and casual readers alike.

Throughout the museum, visitors experience a sense of discovery and admiration, moving naturally from visual wonder to intellectual curiosity while never losing the simple pleasure of reading.

French comic magazine Métal Hurlant is 50 years old! Jean-Pierre Dionnet, Philippe Druillet, Moebius and Bernard Farkas founded the magazine in 1975. So many years later, this dream machine is steaming ahead at full speed. From its early years, Métal Hurlant did not just redefine comics: the magazine pushed the boundaries between artistic disciplines and opened a whole new space for dialogue between drawing, science fiction, music, film and philosophy. Meanwhile, it is widely acknowledged to have changed the face of comics worldwide. In its half-century of existence, the cogs of the machine jammed a few times, but in 2021 the magazine, in a new guise, began a new life. This third revolution, meanwhile, counts 12 issues. To celebrate Métal Hurlant's 50th anniversary, the exhibition looks at the past and present, zooming in on the richness and influence of the revolutionary magazine, which reaches far beyond the world of comics. In 2021, the Comic Art Museum launched Le Dessableur, a bilingual journal devoted to the history and study of comics. The title was inspired by “Rue des Sables,” the street where the museum is located. Conceived as a complement to the museum’s exhibitions, the journal explores themes that would not easily fit within traditional scenography. Each issue takes a closer look at specific aspects of comics—speech balloons, cutaway views, collage, subjective viewpoints, photo comics, silent comics, and autobiographical comics—offering new ways to look at the comic book artform. The journal places great importance on publishing original content by commissioning covers from contemporary artists, presenting previously unpublished comic strips and pages, and developing its own drawn reportages. Le Dessableur serves not only as a platform for art analysis but also a space for artistic creation and experimentation. In just five years and nearly twenty issues, Le Dessableur has established itself as a prolific laboratory where research, history and artistic practice meet.
