Folon Foundation, a poetic journey into the heart of imagination
The Folon Foundation feels like stepping into a waking dream. Located in La Hulpe, just 20 minutes from Brussels, this museum set in the heart of the Solvay Regional Estate invites visitors to slow down, look differently and immerse themselves in the sensitive universe of Jean-Michel Folon. Housed in a beautifully restored former Brabant farm, the foundation is much more than an exhibition space: it is an immersion into the soul of an artist whose work is both poetic and deeply engaged.
A museum imagined by the artist himself
Created in October 2000 by Jean-Michel Folon (1934–2005), the foundation reflects his vision down to the smallest detail. The entire visitor route was designed by the artist himself, conceived as a free and intuitive journey. Here, artworks interact with the architecture, and each room offers a different experience, far removed from a static or academic museum visit.
The original and interactive scenography blends installations, light effects, optical illusions and original music specially composed for the museum. Visitors move forward, pause, observe—sometimes surprised by a mirror, sometimes enveloped by a subtle soundscape. Everything invites contemplation and wonder.
A gentle and inspiring sensory immersion
From the entrance, a sense of calm settles in. Light plays with the artworks, colours soften and shapes communicate without words. The Folon Foundation is a place of renewal, where visitors feel warmly welcomed, almost as if at home. The surrounding greenery naturally extends this feeling of serenity.
The lessons of light and mirrors, the delicate music and the visual effects create an enveloping atmosphere ideal for reflection. Visitors do not rush through the rooms; instead, they take their time, allowing themselves to be touched—or even moved—by the simplicity and depth of the messages.

Folon’s universe is profoundly poetic, yet never detached from reality. His works speak about humanity, freedom, travel and sometimes solitude. Each creation becomes an invitation to travel, both outward and inward. The museum’s location in the heart of nature strengthens this welcome sense of disconnection.

De Stichting Folon verwelkomt Jirō Taniguchi. Portrait lointain, de eerste grote tentoonstelling in Europa in meer dan 10 jaar die gewijd is aan de meester van de manga. Trek naar Terhulpen voor een uitzonderlijke kennismaking met zijn werk.
Ontdek Jirō Taniguchi in de Fondation Folon
De tentoonstelling Portrait lointain kwam tot stand in nauwe samenwerking met de rechthebbenden van Jirō Taniguchi (Tottori 1947 – Tokio 2017) en verschillende vooraanstaande partners. Ze toont de veelzijdigheid van zijn oeuvre, van zijn beginjaren in de jaren 1970 tot het intieme en poëtische werk uit zijn latere carrière.
Op het raakvlak tussen strip en manga maakte Taniguchi tientallen albums, waaronder het beroemde Quartier Lointain, dat in 2003 op het festival van Angoulême de prijs voor het beste scenario kreeg.
Aan de hand van meer dan 160 platen uit Japan, waaronder tal van originele werken die exclusief worden getoond, verkent Portrait lointain de grote thema’s die als een rode draad door het werk van Taniguchi lopen:
- de complexiteit van gevoelens;
- het belang van de zintuigen;
- de verbondenheid met de natuur;
- de grens tussen werkelijkheid en verbeelding.
De tentoonstelling belicht ook de rijkdom van zijn beeldtaal: de kracht van zwart-wit, de opeenvolging en compositie van de vakken en zijn bijzondere oog voor detail.
Deze uitzonderlijke tentoonstelling, georganiseerd in het kader van 160 jaar vriendschap tussen België en Japan, dompelt je onder in de gevoelige, poëtische en bijzonder menselijke wereld van de beroemde mangaka.
Gefascineerd door de Europese strip, maar tegelijk diep geworteld in de Japanse cultuur, droeg Taniguchi bij aan een andere kijk op manga, ver weg van de traditionele clichés van het genre. Zijn werk spreekt zowel stripliefhebbers aan als bezoekers die voor het eerst kennismaken met manga.
Een unieke kans om het werk van een van de grote namen uit de Japanse stripwereld te ontdekken.
Prenez l'Aire: de Stichting Folon nodigt je uit voor een luchtige dag in het hart van het Solvaypark in Terhulpen. Een lofzang op de lucht, de vogels en de wind.
Om de twee jaar, op Hemelvaartsdag, organiseert de Ferme du Château het evenement Prenez l'Air. Deze creatieve, ludieke dag is een gelegenheid om de geneugten van de lucht en de hemel te herontdekken.

- Buitengewone rondleidingen door het museum van de Stichting Folon
- Aquarelwandelingen in het Solvaypark, om de favoriete techniek van de kunstenaar te ontdekken
- Vliegergevechten op het ritme van de betoverende taiko-percussie
- Workshops en demonstraties van origami, de Japanse kunst van het papiervouwen, om vrede en herdenking te vieren met kraanvogels.
