An ideal visit for those who love understanding history by gaining height, listening to stones tell the city’s story and enjoying a meaning-filled panorama during a cultural getaway in Wallonia.
It has dominated the Grand-Place of Tournai for centuries, proud and unwavering. The Belfry of Tournai, the oldest in Belgium, is far more than an iconic monument: it is a true open-air history book. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it tells the story, stone after stone, of the birth of municipal freedoms and the rhythm of urban life since the 12th century.
Rising to 72 metres, the belfry long served as the beating heart of Tournai. Watchtower, part of the city’s defensive system, prison, and civic bell tower – its functions were numerous and essential. Its bells structured everyday life for the inhabitants: they announced trials, executions, fires, invasions and also the key moments of communal life.
A powerful symbol of municipal freedoms, the belfry represented the authority of the city against religious and feudal powers. Looking up at its massive silhouette, it is easy to understand why it has become such a strong landmark for the people of Tournai.
Thanks to a recent renovation, the visit now offers a smooth and immersive experience. After climbing the 142 steps, the effort is well rewarded. The first terrace reveals a 360° panoramic view over Tournai and the surrounding landscape: historic rooftops, winding streets and distant horizons create the feeling that time has paused.
Along the way, new educational rooms mark the route. They reveal the true identity of the Belfry of Tournai: its history, its different roles through the centuries, and its strategic and symbolic importance. The explanations are clear and accessible, helping visitors understand each stage in the monument’s story.
A highlight of the visit is discovering the Bancloque, the oldest and largest bell in the tower. Its presence is striking, both for its size and for what it represents. One can easily imagine its powerful sound once resonating above the city, marking solemn moments and urgent events alike.
On special occasions, the belfry still comes alive through carillon concerts, continuing the musical tradition that has shaped the identity of Tournai for centuries. It is a cultural and emotional experience where history can be heard as much as it can be seen.
Located in the historic centre of Tournai, the belfry fits naturally into a walking tour of the city, just steps away from other remarkable landmarks. Visiting it combines a gentle physical challenge, learning and wonder, offering the perfect balance between heritage and discovery.
