Train World is proud to host two low-stimulus days in 2024. One on Wednesday April 17 and the other on October 2. On these days we organize adapted activities in an adapted museum. What is a 'low-stimulus day'? It is a day that allows for a museum visit in a quiet and adapted environment. The low-stimulus day is for those who like it a bit quieter. In order to ensure a comfortable visit for everyone, the museum is adjusting its scenography. The lighting is adjusted and sounds are turned off. We arrange for some quiet spaces in the museum. A tailored plan shows you the specifics of each room in the museum using a colour code. The quietest spots are in light yellow; the most stimulating in dark red.

Throughout the history of railways, stations have fulfilled many social functions. One of those social functions was and is to make people feel they are coming home. The social role of Hasselt, Liège-Guillemins and Charleroi-Sud stations is mainly associated with the guest workers who came to work in the mines and the steel industry. Now that activities in the mines have come to an end, this role is not visible anymore. Even the cathedral-like station hall at Antwerp Central station acted as a ‘home port’ in the past. After often adventurous rail journeys, the many emigrants came ‘home’ to this station. Nowadays, this station is also home to the many tourists who come to the ‘biscuit city’ for shopping or other entertainment. Another Antwerp station that also had a feeling of homecoming was the now demolished Antwerp-South station. It was there that arriving travellers may have had one final connection to make in order to board one of the packet boats to Harwich or the Congo. Even King Albert I travelled via Antwerp-South station in 1928 so that he could continue his journey to the colony by boat. The former station Oostende-Kaai (now Ostend) was also where all of Europe's nobility came "home" to continue their journey to England by boat. A special hotel was provided in the station for that purpose and King Leopold II even had a royal lodge there. Brussels-Nord was the departure or arrival station of the daily military leave train for members of Belgium's armed forces until the 1990s. And Brussels-Midi station has always played an important role in bringing international and Belgian travellers home, of course. Once there were the Pullman trains, later the TEE trains, and nowadays, the station is an international home for those travelling by Eurostar or ICE.

Today's presentation, on the 188th anniversary of our railways, will begin with the birth of this new mode of transport at the very beginning of the 19th century. The lecture will then focus on the reasons for the rapid emergence of railways in Belgium, which were the first on the continent. There will also be an emphasis on their major role in the industrial and economic development of the country and its regions, taking the example of the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse region. It will then travel from the 19th century to the present day, highlighting several aspects of the rich history of our railways and their profound transformations over time. The presentation will show the respective roles of the State and private companies, with several important examples, such as foreign interventions and Belgian political reactions, leading to the policy of buying private lines. It will also cover a number of important technical developments in several areas, including traction, comfort and safety. It will recall the profound changes that followed the Second World War, such as the contraction of the network following the rise of road traffic, and the end of coal mining and heavy industry, which drastically reduced the transport of goods by rail. However, it will not fail to underline the contribution of TEE, then high-speed rail, not forgetting the rise of container rail transport on a European scale. These dynamics led to the rediscovery of the environmental advantages of railways and, consequently, to major reinvestments, in order to meet the challenges of climate change. A vast railway panorama will therefore be offered as a gift on 5 May.
