An ideal experience for those who wish to understand a major turning point of the Second World War, experience a powerful immersion in an exceptional underground site and take the time to remember, in a place where memory, emotion and history meet in Wallonia.
The Fort Eben-Emael impresses as much by its scale as by the history it carries. Entering this unique underground site means stepping into a place designed to be impregnable, before becoming, in May 1940, the stage of an event that transformed the art of warfare. Here, memory is not frozen in time — it is experienced, in the dense atmosphere of the galleries and the emotion-filled silence that accompanies every step.
From the moment you arrive, the feeling is unmistakable: you are not simply visiting a fort, you are entering a decisive moment in history.
Fort Eben-Emael fascinates visitors with the sheer scale of its underground barracks and its network of tunnels stretching for more than 5 kilometres. The corridors, rooms and impressive volumes reveal the ambition of the original military project. Built to withstand any attack, the fort today retains an authentic atmosphere, almost untouched, that leaves a lasting impression on visitors.
The silence, the cool air of the underground spaces and the seemingly endless perspectives create a powerful sense of immersion. Many visitors leave astonished, moved and deeply impressed by the grandeur of the site and the emotion it conveys.
Fort Eben-Emael is inseparable from the event that made it famous: the first airborne assault in history, carried out in May 1940. This spectacular attack, which caught the fort’s defences by surprise, marked a major turning point in military strategy during the Second World War.
The visit helps visitors understand the context, the unfolding and the consequences of this assault. Beyond a simple military narrative, the experience highlights the surprise, tension and historical impact of the event on the site and on modern warfare.
Starting in the 2026 season, Fort Eben-Emael will introduce an exceptional new experience: a 180-degree immersive exploration of the attack on the fort and Belgium, experienced at the very location where the assault took place. Announced as a unique experience in Europe, it promises to place visitors directly into the events of 10 May 1940 with remarkable intensity.
This approach further strengthens the immersive nature of the site by combining heritage, technology and remembrance, while maintaining deep respect for the events and the people who lived through them.
Fort Eben-Emael is not a conventional museum. It is a living heritage site that both impresses and provokes reflection. Visitors feel the power of the place, the fragility of military certainty and the weight of history. The visit often leaves a lasting impression — a moment of reflection, and sometimes even silence.
