In the mid-20th century, thanks to the inventiveness of its creators and the dynamism of its publishers, Belgium became the European leader in comic book publishing. To reach a wide readership, characters that were born in periodicals quickly crossed borders and expanded beyond frames. Merchandising, advertising, animated films, cinema, radio, television, video games and more, helped the heroes "made in Belgium" take root in the collective imagination, span generations, and even make their way to Hollywood. The exhibition A Century of Belgian Comics reveals the secrets of this epic journey in an immersive, poetic, and all-ages exhibition.

The Comic Museum is pleased to invite you to discover the ‘33/35’ exhibition. It is the culmination of an artist residency that brought together six talented comic book authors for 10 months: Marion Chancerel, Philippe Dupuy, Abdel de Bruxelles, Adeline Cazier, Tony Poulin and Noélia Diaz Iglesias. The exhibition also features the work of three foreign artists who each stayed in the residency for a month: Youssef Rali and Oumaima El Gamraoui from Morocco and Ana Margarida Matos from Portugal. With several excerpts from their work, the exhibition highlights the artists' individual trajectory and, at the same time, their collective project “33/35”. This poetic album describes the road they travel every day to the studio. It is an immersive experience that celebrates the diversity of their artistic approaches. Travel with us to the heart of the contemporary world of comics.

It all started exactly 25 years ago with a fanzine for students in Brussels, ‘Le Spon’. Meanwhile, the independent, alternative and collective publisher L'employé du moi came a long way. Today, their catalogue counts more than 130 original creations. On the occasion of this festive anniversary, the publishing team decided to scrutinise its own evolution in an exhibition. How can the cultural and artistic specificity of L'employé du moi be captured while making such varied and diverse productions? The exhibition tries to answer that question in four major themes in the catalogue. The reinterpretation of genre comics, the role of intimacy, political choices and the coming-of-age story will all be explored, with selections of original plates illustrating the themes. The exhibition allows different works to dialogue with each other, as the collective is used to doing, in the style of an exciting ping-pong match.

Claude Renard has left an indelible mark on Belgian comic book history. Yet he is not so well known to the general public. He was an illustrator, sculptor, graphic designer, designer, scenographer and set and costume designer for theatre, but above all he was the extraordinary inspirer of the Atelier R in St-Luc Brussels. There, in the 1970s, he trained an exceptional generation of comic book creators, whom he introduced to the world in the legendary magazine Le 9è Rêve. Six years after his death, his son Romain, together with Thierry Bellefroid, is reviving the worlds of this aesthete, whose whole life was a work of art. From his bustling studio that he transformed into a cabinet of curiosities to the furniture of his home, from the graphic design of his covers to the posters for his shows, from futuristic comics to history books, from his mineral sculptures to his fascination with Galileo, from his multifarious collections to his countless tools, Claude Renard is elusive. Like the exhibition showcasing his work, he is both whole and fragmented. With contributions from former students of Atelier R, published in Le 9è Rêve, including François Schuiten, Andréas, Sokal, Berthet, Chantal De Spiegeleer, Séraphine, Foerster, Alain Goffin, Anne Baltus and many others. Curator: Thierry Bellefroid and Romain Renard

Noah Van Sciver (born 1984) is a comic book artist from New Jersey. Thanks to the now cult Fante Bukowski series, he quickly grew from the new darling of the alternative scene to a leading figure in contemporary creation. A major producer, Noah Van Sciver has won several Ignatz Awards and was shortlisted for the Eisner Awards. In both fiction and autobiography, each new book shows his remarkable skill in creating spontaneous, earthy stories. Most of his books have been translated worldwide and published in French by L'employé du moi. To mark the anniversary of the publisher L'employé du moi, we have the honour of hosting Noah Van Sciver at our Comic Book Museum for a master class.

Whether in the form of leporellos, pop-ups, folds, cut-outs, or books with other surprising formats, livres-objets are creations where form is just as important as content. While the English term artist’s book is often used, it typically refers to the book as a vehicle for artistic expression. This exhibition, however, deliberately retains the French term livre-objet (French for book-object), to emphasize a fundamental principle: that form and content stand on equal ground. Comics, too, have explored this terrain—though such experiments remained relatively rare throughout the twentieth century. It was only from the mid-2000s onward that the production of comics as livres-objets began to flourish. In tandem with the rise of blogs and webcomics, and in response to the dominance of screens, the Ninth Art reaffirmed its bond to the object, to materiality, and to the tactile. These works are costly to manufacture and time-consuming to make by hand. As a result, they are typically produced in small print runs and seldom reissued. The recent surge in paper prices may already signal the end of this prolific era. This exhibition presents a diverse selection of livres-objets, including a number of unique and rarely seen pieces.
