Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium – A journey through five centuries of artistic creation

The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium offer far more than a traditional museum visit. They invite visitors on a sensitive and inspiring journey through the history of art, from the 15th century to the present day. Located largely on the Mont des Arts in the heart of Brussels, these iconic museums encourage visitors to slow down, look differently and allow themselves to be carried by the power of great works of art. Here, each gallery represents an era, each painting an encounter and each sculpture an emotion.

With a collection of more than 20,000 works, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium form the country’s largest museum complex in terms of attendance. It is an essential destination for art lovers and curious visitors alike who wish to understand how artists, century after century, have shaped the way we see the world.

Four museums, four complementary worlds

The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium consist of four distinct museums, each with its own identity. The Magritte Museum and the Old Masters Museum, both located at Mont des Arts, form the core of the complex. The Wiertz Museum, currently closed for renovation until summer 2026, and the Meunier Museum complete this rich artistic panorama.

This diversity offers a nuanced and varied approach to art, bringing together painting, sculpture and drawing. Moving from one museum to another feels like turning the pages of a vast art history book, with the constant impression of travelling through time.

From the Flemish Primitives to modern masters

The Old Masters Museum presents a majestic journey through the history of visual arts, from the Flemish Primitives to masterpieces of the 18th century. Works by Pieter Bruegel, Peter Paul Rubens and Jacques Jordaens stand out for their narrative power and technical mastery. Each painting reveals a period, a vision of the world and a relationship with the sacred, power or everyday life.

The journey continues with major artists such as Jacques-Louis David, Auguste Rodin, James Ensor, Fernand Khnopff, Henry Moore and Paul Delvaux, reflecting the evolution of artistic forms, ideas and sensibilities up to the 20th century. Visitors often find themselves comparing styles, lingering before a particular work and feeling a subtle connection between past and present.

The dreamlike and intimate world of Magritte

The Magritte Museum offers a very different experience—almost introspective. It houses the largest collection in the world dedicated to the famous Belgian surrealist artist. The atmosphere is quieter and more intimate, encouraging contemplation and curiosity.

Visitors step into a mysterious and dreamlike universe, where images challenge perceptions and invite reflection. Magritte’s works play with reality, language and symbolism, creating the subtle intellectual vertigo that defines his art. Many visitors describe the experience as a suspended moment—an immersion into the imagination of an artist who continues to reshape how we see the world.

A timeless cultural experience in the heart of Brussels

The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium are often described as a true journey through time. Their central location, close to some of Brussels’ most iconic landmarks, makes them a perfect stop during a cultural exploration of the city. The setting of Mont des Arts, with its unique perspectives and atmosphere, further enhances the pleasure of the visit.

Whether visitors spend a few hours or an entire day there, they often leave feeling enriched, inspired and sometimes even deeply moved by the encounter with centuries of artistic creativity.

The Magritte Museum presents an outstanding collection of works by Belgian Surrealist artist René Magritte (1898-1967), one of the world's most famous artists. The collection of over 200 works is the largest in the world. This museum is the international reference centre for the work of this multidisciplinary artist. The unusual world of the surrealist painter-poet is developed through his biography. To approach mystery, to flush out the traps of images or to make thought visible...

Through a new display, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium focus on these gender-related stereotypes. Art x Gender questions how images and artworks reinforce or challenge such representations. Fernand Khnopff, Cécile Douard, Pierre Bonnard, Marie Laurencin, Louis Gallait, Jane Graverol, Vic Gentils, Anna Staritsky, Arman, Olga Morano ... From the 16th to the 20th century, from Lucas Cranach to Roger Raveel, nearly 30 works are exhibited for the occasion at the heart of the Old Masters Museum, some of them for the very first time. And because the reflection does not stop at a single room, it extends throughout the collections, with a guided trail encouraging visitors to continue questioning stereotypes within the permanent displays. In addition, a new participatory program designed for 15–20 year olds is offered to school groups. This scientific and critical perspective on a societal issue is part of a broader process of deconstruction, fully aligned with the museums’ medium-term ambition: to become an institution anchored in society, more open, and more aware of the narratives it conveys. With the support of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, as part of the Alter Égales project.

Art, a question of gender? Gender has been a topic of research and discussion for about fifty years. This autumn, using examples from our collections—from Lucas I Cranach to Evelyne Axell—we ask how images and artworks either support or challenge clichés and stereotypes. We explore themes like couples and the roles or symbols linked to men and women. This visit is a chance to see many different points of view from those who create and/or those who look.

A journey to Spain through a selection of emblematic works, mostly abstract, from the international avant-garde of the 1950s to the 1970s, in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War. The creations of Manolo Millares, Manuel Mompó, Manuel Rivera and Antoni Tàpies enter into dialogue with emblematic pieces from the Royal Museums’ collection. The result? An intense encounter between artists in search of freedom and openness. Discover these distinctive Hispanic abstract and informal tendencies, characterised by raw materials, spontaneous gestures and bold experimentation. This is the second chapter of "Collection Meets", a new series of presentations dedicated to contemporary or modern art that establishes a dialogue between works from the RMFAB collections and pieces from external collections.

This spring, the Spilliaert Room brings to light a figure who long remained in the shadows: Germaine Rimbout (1894–1973), a Brussels-based artist with a singular trajectory. Influenced by Cubism and Fauvism, her work evolved after the Second World War toward a freer abstraction and an increasingly daring colour palette. An exhibition driven as much by the strength of the work as by the personality of the artist. As a female creator in a world still largely dominated by men at the time, she succeeded in forging her own path. Her artistic journey reflects the tensions and aspirations of an era. In collaboration with KBR Since 21 May 2025, the Spilliaert Room has immersed visitors in the poetic and mysterious world of the Belgian illustrator and draughtsman. This new space also hosts temporary presentations of works on paper and honours the exceptional contribution of Spilliaert, whose work enters into dialogue with that of other artists from the collections.
